A Pull-Through Manual Knife Sharpener that's American Made, uses Hardened Steel Wheels, and lives happily in a kitchen drawer.

The knives you own are only as sharp as the last time you sharpened them. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one (you push harder, your grip slips, that's how the emergency-room stories start), and every home cook eventually needs a way to keep an edge on their blades without hauling everything to a professional twice a year.

Draw the blade through the wheels a few times, wipe it clean, done. The wheels are hardened steel with an angled cut, so they shave a controlled amount off the blade edge and leave it factory-sharp. It works on any smooth-edge kitchen knife, Rada-branded or not.

How a Steel Wheel Sharpener actually works, in a few bullets.

  • SPECIALLY EDGED, HARDENED STEEL WHEELS shave the microscopic burrs and rolled edge off a dull blade and restore a factory-fresh cutting edge in a few strokes.
  • Compact 3-and-a-half inches long, 2 inches tall - fits in any kitchen drawer, doesn't demand counter space, doesn't need batteries.
  • Sturdy nylon base holds the sharpener still on the counter while you draw the blade through. Non-slip in practice, not just in the marketing copy.
  • SMOOTH-EDGE KNIVES ONLY - use this on chef knives, paring knives, utility knives, cook's knives. Do NOT use on serrated bread knives or steak knives; they need a different technique this cannot provide.
  • Made in the USA by Rada Manufacturing in Waverly, Iowa. Same materials and sourcing standards as the Rada knives it was designed to sharpen.
  • A few pulls, blade wiped clean, back in the drawer - the two angled wheels grip both sides of the blade at once, so 3 to 6 pulls through the sharpener is plenty for a normal home-use knife (no flipping needed).

Yes, it works on knives that aren't Rada.

Every smooth-edge kitchen knife needs sharpening eventually, regardless of who made it. The Rada sharpener has no brand loyalty. It will happily restore an edge on your Wusthof, your Victorinox, your grocery-store Farberware, or the Made-In you got for your wedding. Just no serrated blades.

Why we recommend the Rada sharpener at Kooi Housewares.

There are plenty of manual sharpeners on the market. Most of them use ceramic rods that wear out, or angled pull-through slots with cheap steel that can nick a good blade. Rada's hardened steel wheels last for years of regular home use, and because Rada makes them specifically to sharpen their own knives, the geometry is dialed in. It's not fancy. The wheel geometry is set for a common kitchen-knife bevel and the hardened steel does not wear out under normal home use.

Product FAQs

How do you use a pull-through knife sharpener?

Set the sharpener on a stable counter. Hold the knife handle in one hand, insert the blade heel-first into the wheel slot, and draw the blade smoothly toward you through the wheels using light pressure. Repeat 3 to 6 times, then wipe the blade clean of any metal shavings.

Do pull-through knife sharpeners ruin knives?

The cheap ones with soft steel or ceramic rods can. Well-made pull-through sharpeners with hardened steel wheels (like this Rada) shave a controlled amount off the blade and restore a factory edge. For heirloom Japanese or high-end knives, a whetstone or professional service is still the gold standard.

Can I sharpen a serrated knife with this sharpener?

No. This sharpener is designed for smooth-edge kitchen knives only (chef, paring, utility, cook's knives). Serrated blades like bread knives and steak knives need a different technique this cannot provide.

Is the Rada Quick Edge Knife Sharpener made in the USA?

Yes. Manufactured by Rada Cutlery in Waverly, Iowa alongside their knife lineup.

How often should you sharpen kitchen knives?

For a home cook, a few pulls through the sharpener every 1 to 2 months keeps a working edge. If you notice the knife slipping off a tomato skin or needing extra pressure to slice, it's overdue.
