The Beginnings of Oxo

Oxo's brand was born in 1990 when the founder, Sam, realized that many everyday kitchen tools weren't designed to provide people with comfort or ease of use. Many kitchen tools had a universal design that weren't especially tailored towards user-specific needs - they were simply created to get a job done, whether or not doing so was enjoyable. When his wife Betsey developed arthritis and was struggling to use a standard vegetable peeler, Sam decided to take matters into his own hands. After developing a concept for a vegetable peeler that would serve her hands by simultaneously providing function and comfort, Sam didn't stop there.

Oxo Good Grips

The Oxo brand continued applying the same principles used to make the peeler to many other kitchen utensils and tools. The goal was to serve disadvantaged groups of people in the kitchen - such as those with arthritis or other minor disabilities - and remove these barriers by making improved tools that would universally make cooking easier for everyone. Marketing proved difficult at first since no one understood why they too might want products tailored especially for those with hurting hands. But now, over 30 years later, the Oxo Good Grips sub-brand product line still focuses on optimizing the functionality of cooking tools while ensuring that they are soft to handle and touch (and people finally get it!) It's a tall order - indeed, it takes some smart engineers to understand such complex designs and execute them in this way. With 15 grinding settings and more time presets, it was created to save users valuable time and energy early in the day (because who has that anyway?!)
