Small Curved Paring Knife with a Bird's Beak Blade, Hand-Sharpened in Iowa

The Rada curved granny paring knife is the tiny tool that quietly runs your prep board. Its short curved blade hooks into the natural roundness of an apple, a peach or a plum, so peels come off in one clean spiral instead of a pile of chewed-up ribbons.

Hollow-ground from T420 surgical-grade stainless and hand-sharpened in Waverly, Iowa, this small paring knife holds its edge through years of small-scale prep. Pick the silver satin aluminum handle or the black resin one and let it live in the drawer with your other Rada favorites.

Why Grandma's Little Curved Knife Still Earns Counter Space

  • Curved bird's-beak edge. The concave shape cradles round produce, so you can peel apples, potatoes and citrus in-hand without the blade skipping off.
  • 2⅜" blade, 5⅞" total length. Small enough for garnish and detail cuts, sturdy enough for real prep work.
  • T420 surgical-grade stainless steel. Hollow-ground and hand-sharpened in Iowa for a fine, lasting edge on hand-held tasks.
  • Two handle options. Silver satin cast aluminum for the classic Rada look, or black resin for a modern grip and more dishwasher tolerance.
  • Made in Waverly, Iowa since 1948. American materials, American labor, backed by Rada's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
  • Great for the small stuff. Hulling strawberries, coring tomatoes, deveining shrimp, shaping vegetables for garnish and any tight-quarters cutting job.

A Little Knife That Punches Above Its Weight

Weight, or the lack of it, is part of the charm. At just under six inches total the granny parer disappears into your hand, which is exactly what you want when you are peeling a bowl of apples for pie or trimming stems off a flat of berries. Once you get used to hand-held peeling with a curved blade, going back to a straight paring knife for round produce feels clumsy.

Why Kooi Housewares Carries Rada Cutlery

We stock Rada Cutlery at Kooi Housewares because Rada has been running the same family-scale operation in Waverly, Iowa since 1948, hand-sharpens every blade, and backs each knife with a real lifetime warranty. Every blade is hollow-ground and hand-sharpened, all materials come from American suppliers, and Rada backs the knife with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Nothing flashy, no marketing gloss, just a knife that shows up and does the work.

Product FAQs

What is a bird's beak or granny paring knife used for?

The curved blade hooks into round produce, so it is the tool of choice for peeling apples, potatoes and citrus in-hand, hulling strawberries, coring tomatoes and shaping vegetables for garnish. The concave edge follows the curve of the food, giving you longer, cleaner strips than a straight blade can.

How is a granny paring knife different from a regular paring knife?

A regular paring knife has a mostly straight edge with a slight belly, which excels at general slicing on a board. The granny (bird's beak) style has a downward-curved blade that shines for in-hand peeling and detail cuts on round produce. Most kitchens benefit from having one of each.

Is Rada Cutlery still made in the USA?

Yes. Rada has been making knives in Waverly, Iowa since 1948. The company was acquired by St. Martin Holdings Company in 2024, but manufacturing stayed in Waverly and materials are still sourced from American suppliers.

How do I sharpen a curved paring knife?

Use a pull-through sharpener designed for the edge type of your blade, or work the concave curve in short strokes on a whetstone. Rada's Quick Edge Sharpener sharpens both sides of a smooth-edge blade in a single pull, but it should not be used on a serrated blade.

Can I put my Rada knife in the dishwasher?

The black resin handle tolerates a dishwasher cycle, but Rada and Kooi Housewares both recommend hand washing. Dishwasher heat and jostling can leave micro-bends in hand-sharpened blades and shorten the edge life. The silver aluminum handle version is hand wash only.

What size is the Rada granny paring knife?

The blade measures 2⅜ inches and total length is 5⅞ inches. Small enough for detail work and hand-held peeling, but sturdy enough for real daily prep.

Care Instructions: Hand wash and dry immediately after use. The black resin handle can survive a dishwasher cycle, but hand washing preserves the hand-sharpened edge and the handle finish. The silver satin cast aluminum handle is hand wash only. Store the knife in a drawer sleeve, block or on a magnetic strip so the blade does not knock against other utensils. Re-sharpen with a pull-through sharpener designed for your blade edge type when you notice the knife working harder than usual.
