Rada Peeling Paring Knife: Small Blade, Big Peel Appeal

Some knives you unsheathe with ceremony. This one you grab because there is an apple, and the apple is not going to peel itself. The Rada Peeling Paring Knife pairs a 2.5-inch spear-point blade with a comfortable, in-the-palm grip - built for close-up work like peeling potatoes over the sink, coring strawberries, deveining shrimp, and getting fussy little garnishes to actually look like garnishes.

Hollow-ground and hand-sharpened at Rada's factory in Waverly, Iowa, the T420 high-carbon stainless edge takes to fruit skins like it has been waiting all week for the invitation. Pick your handle: silver satin cast aluminum for the classic Rada look, or black resin for a modern grip.

Why This Little Paring Knife Cuts Above

  • 2.5-inch spear-point blade for precision peeling, coring, and hulling. The shorter blade sits in-hand so you can turn a paring apple, not chase it around a cutting board.
  • Hollow-ground, hand-sharpened T420 high-carbon stainless steel - takes a serious edge and holds it through weeks of daily prep.
  • Two handle choices: silver satin cast aluminum for the vintage-Rada aesthetic, or black resin that shrugs off soapy fingers.
  • 6⅛-inch total length - light enough to work all afternoon without hand fatigue, small enough to tuck into a drawer or a picnic knife roll.
  • Made in USA from American-sourced steel, aluminum, and resin. Forged, ground, and packed in Waverly, Iowa since 1948.
  • Rada lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Buy it once, hand it down.

A Little Knife With a Big Job Description

Paring knives earn their keep when the food is small and the cuts are precise: pitting cherries, segmenting citrus, trimming stem ends off green beans, scoring the top of a hot cross bun. If you have been muscling through those tasks with an 8-inch chef's knife, you already know it does not exactly excel at the delicate stuff. This is the blade that quietly moves to the front row of the drawer.

Why Kooi Housewares Carries Rada

Kooi Housewares stocks Rada because the story checks out. Rada has been forging knives in Waverly, Iowa since 1948, and even after the 2024 acquisition by St. Martin Holdings, every blade is still ground and sharpened at that same Iowa plant. Family-scale, American-sourced, lifetime-warrantied - that is the kind of thing we like to see on the shelf. Questions about the blade, the handle finish, or which Rada knife to add next? Email us at support@kooihousewares.com and we'll help you sort it.

Product FAQs

What is a paring knife used for?

A paring knife handles the small, precise jobs a chef's knife is too big for: peeling apples and potatoes, coring strawberries, hulling tomatoes, deveining shrimp, segmenting citrus, and cutting decorative garnishes. Rada's Peeling Paring version, with its short 2.5-inch spear-point blade, is tuned specifically for peeling and in-hand work.

What is the difference between a peeling knife and a paring knife?

They overlap. A traditional peeling knife often has a curved 'bird's beak' blade meant to follow the contour of round fruit, while a paring knife has a straight or spear-point blade for general small-scale prep. Rada's Peeling Paring Knife is a spear-point paring blade sized short (2.5 inches) to make peeling and coring easier without giving up the versatility of a paring knife.

How long should a paring knife blade be?

Most paring knives fall between 2.5 and 4 inches. A 2.5-inch blade like this Rada Peeling Paring version is ideal for peeling and delicate hand work, while a 3 to 3.5-inch blade (like the Rada Regular Paring) suits general slicing of shallots, garlic, and small vegetables.

How do you sharpen a Rada paring knife?

Rada's own Quick Edge Sharpener is designed for it - a pull-through with hardened steel wheels that sharpens both sides of the smooth blade in one pull, no flipping needed. Take 3 to 5 gentle pulls when the edge starts to feel tired. Do not use it on serrated blades.

Is the black resin handle dishwasher safe?

The black resin handle tolerates the dishwasher better than the silver aluminum version, but Rada still recommends hand washing all of their knives. Dishwasher detergents and heat can dull the edge and cause micro-dents in the blade over time.

Where is Rada Cutlery made?

Every Rada knife is made in Waverly, Iowa, USA, from American-sourced materials. Rada has been in Waverly since 1948 and continues manufacturing there after being acquired by St. Martin Holdings in 2024.

Relevant Dimensions: Blade Length: 2½" / Total Length: 6⅛"

Material: Blade: Surgical Steel / Black Handle: Resin / Silver Handle: Cast Aluminum

Color: Steel/Black OR Steel/Silver

Made in: USA

Brand Headquarters: Waverly, Iowa

Care Instructions: Hand wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately after use. The black resin handle can technically survive the dishwasher, but hand washing is still recommended for both handle variants - dishwasher detergents and jostling against other items can dull the edge and leave micro-dents in the blade. Do not soak. Store dry in a drawer, on a magnetic bar, or in a knife block. Touch up the edge as needed with a Rada Quick Edge Sharpener - a few gentle pulls, both sides sharpened in a single pass.
