Rada Stubby Butcher Knife: A Short Butcher Blade With American-Made Bite

Meet the workhorse that never leaves your cutting board. The Rada Stubby Butcher Knife pairs a 5 3/8 inch hollow-ground stainless blade with a full-grip handle, giving you the reach of a small butcher knife and the finesse of a prep knife in one hand.

It portions raw chicken, breaks down a butternut squash, trims a chuck roast, and glides through a ripe tomato without squishing it. If you have been hunting for a made-in-USA butcher knife that does not need two hands to steer, this compact-but-capable blade is where the search ends.

No Bones About It: Why This Short Butcher Blade Earns Its Keep

  • 5 3/8 inch hollow-ground blade - long enough to portion a roast, short enough to peel and slice fruit right in your palm.
  • Surgical-grade T420 high-carbon stainless steel - the same steel Rada has hand-sharpened in Waverly, Iowa since 1948, so the edge lands scary-sharp right out of the box.
  • Full comfort handle with finger guard - your knuckles stay clear of the board and your grip does not fatigue during a Sunday meal prep marathon.
  • Two handle choices - silver satin cast aluminum for the classic Rada look, or black resin for a slightly grippier hold in wet hands.
  • Made in the USA start to finish - blades stamped, ground, and assembled in Waverly, Iowa from American-sourced materials.
  • Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects - Rada stands behind every knife for as long as it is in your kitchen.
  • Balanced for one-handed control - the shorter blade is easier to steer around bones, joints, and rind than a longer chef knife.

Who Reaches For This Knife?

Cooks who want one blade on the counter instead of five. The Stubby Butcher handles the jobs a paring knife is too small for and a French chef knife is overkill for - sectioning a whole chicken, cubing potatoes for hash, slicing a block of sharp cheddar for a snack board, or squaring up a pork shoulder before it hits the smoker. If your current utility knife feels flimsy, this is the upgrade you have been circling.

Why Kooi Housewares Carries It

Rada has been hand-sharpening knives in Waverly, Iowa since 1948, and even after St. Martin Holdings picked up the company in 2024, the whole operation stays right there in Iowa. That family-scale, American-sourced, still-under-lifetime-warranty story is exactly why Kooi Housewares keeps the full Rada line in stock. Not sure which handle is right for your kitchen? Email us at support@kooihousewares.com and we will point you at the right pick.

Product FAQs

What is a Rada stubby butcher knife used for?

The Rada Stubby Butcher Knife is a compact all-purpose meat and produce knife. Its 5 3/8 inch hollow-ground blade is sized for portioning chicken and roasts, cubing vegetables, slicing cheese, and general prep work that a paring knife is too small for and a full chef knife is oversized for.

Is the Rada Stubby Butcher Knife made in the USA?

Yes. Every Rada knife is stamped, ground, hand-sharpened, and assembled in Waverly, Iowa from American-sourced materials. Rada has been making knives there since 1948. St. Martin Holdings acquired the company in 2024 but manufacturing stays in Waverly.

Can the Rada Stubby Butcher Knife go in the dishwasher?

We recommend hand washing both handle versions. The silver satin aluminum handle should never go in the dishwasher. The black resin handle is dishwasher-tolerant, but hand washing preserves the hollow-ground edge and the handle finish for years longer.

What is the difference between a butcher knife and a chef knife?

A butcher knife is built to work with meat - portioning, trimming, and separating cuts - and typically has a heavier, curved blade. A chef knife is a longer, thinner all-purpose prep blade optimized for rock-chopping vegetables. The Stubby Butcher is a shorter, more nimble take on the butcher shape, which is why it doubles as an everyday prep knife.

How long is the Rada Stubby Butcher blade?

The blade measures 5 3/8 inches and the total length is 9 7/8 inches, tip to handle end. That puts it between a paring knife and a full-size chef knife on the Rada size ladder.

Does the Rada Stubby Butcher Knife come with a warranty?

Yes. Rada backs every knife with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. If a factory flaw ever shows up, they will make it right.

Material: Blade: Surgical Steel / Black Handle: Resin / Silver Handle: Cast Aluminum

Color: Steel/Black OR Steel/Silver

Brand Headquarters: Waverly, Iowa

Care Instructions: Hand wash and dry immediately after use for the longest life. The silver satin aluminum handle is hand wash only; the black resin handle is dishwasher-tolerant but hand washing preserves the blade edge and handle finish. Do not soak the knife or leave it wet in the sink. A very light coat of food-grade oil on the blade helps prevent surface spotting between uses. Sharpen with a Rada Quick Edge Sharpener as needed, and store in a knife block, sheath, or on a magnetic bar to protect the edge.
